Cyberbullying is a serious problem. All over the country, communities and organizations are promoting awareness about cyberbullying with grassroot movements gaining momentum along with signed petitions and national support. This Saturday, April 21, in Parker, Colorado the community is coming together for a National Day of Cyberbulling Awareness, an informative event promoting the national conversation on Internet safety and cyberbullying. This free live event will be streamed live nationally at events in eight others cities and online.

According to the National Crime Prevention Council, 43% of teens reported being a victim of cyberbullying, of which only 11% told their parents or teachers they were being harassed online. The struggle to balance both freedom of speech and a persons right to privacy seems to be at the center of the discussion. Currently there are no federal laws defining cyberbullying or a standard for punishment. A number of national cases involving online harassment have ended in fatality and other serious problems, which is why people all over the country are coming together to make a difference in their community and hopefully the world.

Here are some great resources on how you and your community can get involved in the fight against cyberbulling:

Request that children and youth sign an Internet safety pledge promising that they will not cyberbully or share their personal information

Establish acceptable Internet use and anti-cyberbully- ing policies in school; 92 percent of teens who were cyberbullied knew their victimizers—half of those teens knew the cyberbullies from school

Let parents know that they should establish Internet use rules for their kids, which should include tangible consequences

Law enforcement officers can:

Stay up-to-date on cybersafety issues and law

Learn about the technology teens use and the social networking sites that they frequent

Find out the protocol to follow in order to contact social networking sites to have cyberbullying site pro-files removed

Speak with students, parents, and educators about some of the dangers that are present on the Internet, and promote cybersafety

Talk to school officials about creating an enforceable anti-cyberbullying policy on school grounds

Community leaders can:

Organize a cybersafety forum or community discus- sion that involves students, parents, educators, local law enforcement officers, city and school officials, and local technology companies

Sponsor an Internet safety awareness day for kids to learn about safe Internet use

Provide information to parents, educators, and law enforcement officers about how teens use the Internet, what websites teens frequent, how to contact site moderators and ISPs if teens are cyberbullied, and when to contact law enforcement regarding a cyber- bullying situation

Work with school technology departments to make sure that teens are being cybersafe

Everyone in your community can help raise awareness about cyberbullying and take preventive action against this ever-growing problem.

—— > Take steps to protect your children online with parental control software.

There are programs and resources out there to help keep your children safe, and keep you in the loop!

Know everything your teenagers and pre-teens do on the computer and Internet. SPECTOR PRO provides peace of mind for parents concerned about their teen’s computer and online activity. With the ability to monitor, record and review DVR-like playback of what they do online, SPECTOR PRO provides “Always On” protection for your teen.

SPECTOR PRO records emails, chats, instant messages, website visits, programs used and other actions. It allows you to block all Internet activity or any specific website or person you feel is unsuitable. SPECTOR PRO warns you when it detects inappropriate behavior and sends immediate and detailed reports of when, where and how detected keywords or phrases were used.

For additional protection, SPECTOR PRO continually takes snapshots of the computer screen as often as you’d like, which gives you an accurate and visual view of what you teens and tweens have been doing on their computer and online. You can then review those recordings whenever you wish with simple, easy-to-use, video-style controls – much like watching your DVR. With all this and more, SPECTOR PRO has deservedly earned its reputation as the most comprehensive, trusted monitoring software available.

Install eBLASTER Mobile on their Android and BlackBerry smartphones, and record all messages sent and received, even when the messages are deleted from the phone. You can determine if the content of your child’s mobile messages is appropriate, or if they make or receive too many phone calls. You’ll get a detailed log of when, how long and to whom they talked, along with incoming and outgoing phone numbers. And, with eBLASTER Mobile’s new geofencing capability, you have the ability to set up electronic boundaries around specific locations such as their school or a friend’s house. You’ll receive an email alert when they enter or leave that designated area, and position alerts will keep you informed as to where they are and where they’re supposed to be.

eBLASTER Mobile allows you to monitor, track and audit your teen’s mobile device activity, no matter where they are located. eBLASTER Mobile automatically sends you easy-to-read Activity Reports with details on their phone calls, messages sent and received, location tracking, and more. Safeguarding your teenager or pre-teen is as easy and fast as opening up your email.

iPhone Help:

Here is another software to check out for monitoring your child’s iPhone: http://www.mobile-spy.com/

For information regarding the iPhone, you can easily access your child’s text messages and notes, by having them ‘sync’ with their G-Mail settings. This can be done in the settings tab under the iPhone, and if you set-up a G-Mail account for their phone make sure you have access to that password. Then you will have access to whatever you ‘sync’ with their G-Mail account.

New York (2012) – More than 10 percent of parents around the world say their child has been effected by cyberbullying and nearly one-fourth know a youngster who has been a victim, according to a new Ipsos/Reuters poll. Cyberbullying has clearly become a global issue.

And more than three-quarters of people questioned in the global survey thought cyberbullying differed from other types of harassment and warranted special attention and efforts from parents and schools.”

The data clearly shows an appetite among global citizens for a targeted response to cyberbullying,” said Keren Gottfried, of the global research firm Ipsos, which conducted the poll.

But, she added, whether or not schools live up to this mandate is in the hands of educators.

The online poll of more than 18,000 adults in 24 countries, 6,500 of whom were parents, showed the most widely reported vehicle for cyberbullying was social networking sites likes Facebook, which were cited by 60 percent.

Mobile devices and online chat rooms were a distant second and third, each around 40 percent.

While the report showed that awareness of cyberbullying was relatively high, with two-thirds saying they heard, read or had seen information on the phenomenon, cultural and geographic differences abounded.

In Indonesia, 91 percent said they knew about cyberbullying, in which a child, group of children or younger teen intentionally intimidates, threatens or embarrasses another child or group through the use of information technology such as social media or mobile devices.

Australia followed at 87 percent, while Poland and Sweden trailed slightly behind. But only 29 percent in Saudi Arabia, and 35 percent in Russia, had heard of cyberbullying.

In the United States, where cases of cyberbullying have been widely reported to have been linked to teen-age suicides, the figure was 82 percent.

Gottfried described the survey as the first global study of its kind and a benchmark to where assessments of cyberbullying vary.

“The key to this study is that it measures parental awareness of cyberbullying, not actual rates of the behavior,” she said. “While we can’t speculate on what actually happens, it is quite possible that the proportion of children actually being cyberbullied is in fact understated, since we are speaking with the parents, not the kids.”

In India 32 percent of parents said their child had experienced cyberbullying, followed by 20 percent in Brazil and 18 percent in Canada and Saudi Arabia and 15 percent in the United States.

The highest incidence of people knowing of a child in the community being targeted was in Indonesia, with 53 percent. But only 14 percent there said their child had been cyberbullied — less than in Canada, Brazil, Saudi Arabia and the United States.

Overall, parents in France and Spain reported some of the lowest incidence of cyberbullying either of their own child or one in their community.

Gottfried said that future studies could show whether there was a trend toward greater awareness of cyberbullying, and shed some light on what affects parental awareness.

The best online protection includes educating your own children about online safety. Instead of listing rules and expecting them to follow without question, sit down with your children and engage them in this discussion. Explaining why it’s important to practice safe habits on the Internet is just as important as the tips we’ve shared below. Spending time online with your children is fun! Safe habits start with a good example. Talking to your children about online safety is the best way to ensure both understanding and cooperation, but setting up a few basic rules doesn’t hurt either. Check out our top 10 online saftey tips to get you started.

1. Teach your children never to give out personal information online. This includes: name, address, phone numbers, passwords, school names, sport teams they play on, fields at which they practice, etc.

2. Set rules and guidelines for your children before they go online. Discuss the rules and place them near the computer as a reminder of why online safety is important.

3. Keep the computer in an open area to better monitor your children’s Internet use.

4. Review your screen name(s) and see if they reveal too much information that may entice a predator.

5. Turn on the setting that saves chat and message history on your children’s programs.

6. Make all social networking site profiles private. Review and screen your children’s friends/buddy lists often. Know who your children are talking to online.

7. Surf the web with your children and explain proper Internet etiquette. Online safety begins with good examples.

8. Make sure your children know to come to you if anything online makes them uncomfortable or seems inappropriate. Assure them that honesty about their online experiences will not be punished.

9. Contact local law enforcement if a stranger contacts you or if your children are ever solicited in any manner. Do not delete e-mails and chat sessions, as these may be needed as evidence by the authorities.

10. Install Internet filters and parental control software on your computer and/or configure the software that you already have on your computer.
